The City of Berkeley is excited to share the recruitment for Aquatics Coordinator. This classification is responsible for the coordination and management of City Aquatics facilities and programs.  We are seeking applications from highly skilled individuals with recreation program planning and coordination experience with an emphasis on aquatics facility management.  The incumbent plans, organizes and implements multi-faceted City-wide recreation and aquatics programs and activities; identifies community swim program needs and recommends alternatives or enhanced programs; inspects pools and facilities and performs routine pool maintenance; provides staff training and professional development.

 Successful applicants will have the ability to:
  •  Assist in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, procedures and work standards for the aquatics section
  • Participate in the preparation and administration of the aquatics program budget 
  • Plan, organize, assign, direct, review and evaluate the work of assigned staff 
  • Participate in the selection of personnel and provides for their training and professional development 
  • Evaluate swimming skills and provide in-service training in advanced swimming techniques
  • Develop and ensure enforcement of water safety standards and enforce safety and operating procedures
  • Assist with coaching and water safety training
  • Confer with and provide professional assistance to City departments on aquatics programs and related matters
  • Direct subordinate staff in the daily activities and operations of City aquatics centers and aquatics programs 
  • Develop program proposals and recommends fee schedules
  • Evaluate aquatics programs and aquatics center services and recommends improvements
  • Identify aquatics center service needs and develop and implement programs to fulfill these needs
  • Formulate and organize program plans and schedules for seasonal and year-round swimming activities
  • Conduct inspections of aquatics centers and ensure maintenance including review of log books, check of water chemistry and possible backwash, installation of new equipment, cleaning of clogged drains and replacement of underwater lights
  • Order supplies, contact vendors and conduct site inspections for outside maintenance contract work
  • Assess and recommend pool facilities capital improvement needs and secure budgetary cost estimates
  • Maintain contacts with neighborhood groups, schools, volunteers and other community groups and provide necessary coordination for programs and services, and prepare news releases, posters and brochures to publicize aquatics center programs and activities
  • Ensure accurate collection and recordkeeping for program receipts and oversee rental and registration activities
  • Prepare a variety of periodic and special reports related to aquatics center and aquatics program activities
  • Plan and participate in fund-raising and other special events
Equivalent to graduation from high school


Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in recreation program planning and coordination which has included aquatics facility management, life guarding, swimming instruction or coaching, two (2) years of lead level directing, and courses in the principles and techniques of effective supervision.

Supervisory or program management experience is desirable. College-level coursework in recreation, physical education or a closely related field may be substituted for the education outlined above on a year-for-year basis.

Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, maintenance of a valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record is required. Must possess or obtain a Certified Pool Operator, and current First Aid, Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificates issued by the Red Cross or other appropriate agency.

  • Red Cross approved water safety and life-saving techniques
  • Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first-aid techniques
  • Modern swimming methods and instruction techniques
  • Principles and practices of aquatics program planning, development and administration
  • Community recreation and swimming needs
  • Principles and practices of effective employee supervision, including selection, training, evaluation and discipline
  • Basic budgeting principles
  • Principles, practices and methods of needs assessment and program evaluation
  • Rules, regulations, codes and ordinances pertaining to the maintenance and operation of aquatics centers and aquatics programs
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry practices through professional literature and study
  • Pool maintenance and water chemistry

Skill in and ability to:
  • Plan, organize, assign, direct, review and evaluate the work of assigned staff
  • Motivate and evaluate staff and provide for their training and professional development
  • Implement goals, objectives, policies, procedures, work standards and internal controls
  • Plan, organize and implement multi-faceted recreation and aquatics programs and activities; Identify community swim program needs and recommend alternatives or enhanced programs; Inspect and performing routine pool maintenance including pool water chemistry checks
  • Exercise sound, independent judgment within general policy guidelines
  • Perform life-saving techniques, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and basic first-aid
  • Prepare clear, concise and complete written reports and correspondence and make oral presentations
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

The examination process can consist of:
  1. Review of applications for minimum qualifications for the position and to ensure all materials have been submitted.
  2. Applicants that meet the minimum requirements will undergo a competitive review and assessment of their supplemental questionnaire responses to evaluate education/training, and experience to determine the best qualified applicants. 
  3. Best qualified applicants will be invited to an Assessment Center tentatively scheduled for the week of March 25th.

The examination process is subject to change. Applicants passing all examination phases will have their names placed on an employment eligible list that hiring department(s) will use to conduct final selection interviews. Hiring Department(s) will contact applicants directly if selected to participate in their hiring/selection process.
