Boston Conservatory at Berklee invites applications for a full-time faculty position as conductor, teacher, and Head of Choral Studies in the Music Division. The ideal candidate for this position will be a motivated, innovative professional who is committed to excellence in teaching, has a demonstrated record of national or international musical engagement as a conductor and teacher, and enjoys working in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and multicultural understanding. This is a 9-month full-time faculty position with renewable contract; initial appointment to begin September 1, 2020. Compensation and rank are commensurate with professional experience.

Choral Studies at Boston Conservatory:
Boston Conservatory’s Choral Studies Program comprises three ensembles for undergraduate and graduate singers: chorale (mixed voices); choir (treble voices); and Conductors’ Choir – a training choir overseen by the Head and conducted by the MM Choral Conducting students. The Choral Studies area constitutes a range of courses including two Score Study classes, Choral Repertoire I-IV, and two Score Study Practicum courses. The choirs offer 6 full concerts each season, at least one with orchestra or large instrumental ensemble. Other projects vary and include an annual partnership with the composition department for student composers and an invited guest composer-in residence. The ensembles also participate in a range of festivals and choral gatherings throughout the year, as well as outreach and special events.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Primary duties for this position include conducting one of the Conservatory’s large ensembles; teaching choral studies classes; overseeing and advising the MM Choral Conducting students; teaching private lessons to choral conducting students; guiding the work of the Conductors’ Choir; overseeing all aspects of the choral program including, with the chair and the Dean, marketing and programming, interacting with the large ensembles office, and working with the Admissions Office toward recruitment for both the Choral Conducting MM and the BM Voice populations. The successful candidate will have experience building and maintaining partnerships with local arts organizations to benefit the masters students in conducting as well as undergraduate voice students interested in further experience in ensemble performance. Other duties and responsibilities will be based on candidate’s individual experience, along with areas of the candidate’s specialization. Service to the Conservatory includes academic advising, faculty meetings, advancing the work of the Department, and other duties as assigned. Service to the field is also expected and will include active involvement in national professional choral/vocal organizations, presentations at conferences, guest conducting, and/or professional performing.

Required Skills:

  • High level conducting skills with choral and instrumental ensembles
  • Advanced training in conducting pedagogy
  • Advanced understanding of classical vocal training
  • Advanced academic training in music history and music theory, and the ability to teach Choral Repertoire or Score Study courses
  • Mastery of French, German, Italian and English lyric diction
  • Mastery of additional language(s) a plus

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate of Musical Arts preferred
  • Minimum 3 years teaching in accredited Higher Education Institution
  • An openness to diverse musical styles and ways of learning/teaching
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience and willingness to work within a diverse faculty and student body
