ABOUT THE POSITION

Jail Mental Health Services:  The crisis specialists provide psychiatric assessment to clients in a correctional institution. They are responsible for conducting crisis and mental health assessments of inmate patients, either at time of booking or at any point during their incarceration. Evaluations and treatment can include brief psychotherapeutic interventions, medication management, crisis intervention, and 5150 evaluations. With information derived from a clinical interview, nursing and deputy reports, case history, and collateral information, including the reason for their arrest and incarceration, the Crisis Specialist/Licensed Crisis Specialist writes a semi-structured report, develops and then implements a treatment plan for clients under their care including making referrals to appropriate disciplines and agencies (at discharge) based on the indicated need.

Currently, we are recruiting for the following vacancies within the jail mental health team that will be filled with either a Crisis Specialist or a Licensed Crisis Specialist:

  • 1 (one) part-time, 0.5 FTE position (20 hours a week)
  • 1 (one) full-time, fixed term position ending on 6/30/2023 
Schedules for positions(subject to change based on business needs):
  • 1 (one) part-time, 0.5 FTE position: Sun AM shift, 6am-4:30pm and Tue PM shift, 3:30pm-2am (two 10-hour shifts)
  • 1 (one) full-time, fixed term  position ending on 6/30/2023: Wed-Sat 3:30pm-2am (four 10-hour shifts)

The fixed term position is initially funded up to June 30, 2023.  Please note, this position may end prior to June 30, 2023 if funding ceases or the work is complete.  In addition, this position may continue after June 30, 2023 if funding is renewed or extended.  Per PMR 48.2, fixed term employees are not subject to Reduction in Force rights at the completion of the term.

Please note, there is a 10% differential paid for all shifts worked in the jail.  Additionally, shift differentials are paid for evening, weekend, overnight and holiday shifts. ABOUT YOU

Our Highly Qualified Candidate: Our highly qualified candidate will have experience working with mentally ill, emotionally disturbed, or justice involved adults in crisis situations. He/she will be able to work independently and collaboratively with a small team as well as with law enforcement and medical professionals. The candidate will be able to organize their work effectively, as well as being able to document complex clinical information quickly, accurately, and concisely, and utilize this information to rapidly develop a treatment plan. The ideal candidate has the ability to utilize de-escalation skills while maintaining safety of self and inmate client and has the ability to work effectively in high stress circumstances. The ideal candidate will have strong diagnostic and assessment skills in addition to having the ability to work with and relay information to a wide-range of clients, families, and other professionals.

EITHER possession of a Master's degree from an accredited institution in social work, psychiatric nursing, psychology, counseling or a closely related field, OR possession of a Doctoral degree in clinical psychology or a closely related field, OR completion of three years of graduate education including completion of the doctoral-qualifying comprehensive examinations and a university-approved clinical internship equal to two full-time academic quarters (900 hours).  Two years of clinical mental health experience under qualified supervision in a mental health setting appropriate to the assignment.  The experience must have included screening, diagnostic assessment, referral/linkage and/or treatment in either an inpatient, outpatient, field based, or criminal justice setting for extremely emotionally disturbed and/or psychiatrically impaired individuals. 
 
 
LICENSES: 
 
Crisis Specialist:  Must be eligible and sit for professional licensure as a Clinical Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, Clinical Psychologist, Professional Clinical Counselor or Registered Nurse in the State of California within timelines consistent with the W&I Code.  Qualified non-California residents must obtain a California License within timelines consistent with the W&I Code.  Failure to obtain licensure within the specified timelines will result in termination of employment.
 
Licensed Crisis Specialist:  Must be professionally licensed as a Clinical Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, Clinical Psychologist, Professional Clinical Counselor or Registered Nurse in the State of California.  Qualified non-California residents must obtain a California License within timelines consistent with the W & I Code.  Failure to obtain licensure within the specified timelines will result in termination of employment.
 
California Driver's License:  Employees who drive on County business to carry out job-related duties must possess a valid California driver's license for the class of vehicle driven and meet automobile insurability requirements of the County including review of a recent DMV history. At the time of the selection interview by the appointing authority, applicants will have to furnish a recent DMV driving record.

Background Investigation: Successful applicants will be subject to a thorough and rigorous background investigation which may include, but is not limited to, a criminal records check, interviews with friends, relatives, neighbors and employers; verification of DMV records; and overall employment and education history. An applicant may be disqualified for past criminal convictions, poor driving record, providing false background information, and other reasons.

Drug Use Standards: No use of any other illegal drug in the past three years (except in the case of marijuana which is within the past one year). No felony drug use (e.g. cocaine, amphetamines, etc.) in the past five years. No hallucinogenics ever. No intravenous drug use or drug sales ever. Applicants successful in testing will be given a polygraph examination and/or computerized voice stress analysis and will be asked about illegal drug use. (See pre-employment drug use guidelines.)

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
